Killahora apple drinks newsletter November 2022
Chase away those evil spirits—try the apple drinks of Killahora Orchards this Hallowe'en instead! Also—tasting events lined up for November, and news of recent arrivals.
Local apples—world class drinks
They could hardly be more local! All the way from Glounthaune, just outside Cork, the hand-made drinks of Killahora Orchards come from more than a hundred varieties of apples chosen from around the world for their individual qualities.
Killahora Pom’O Apple Port 18% 500 ml
€27.00
Apples grown in south facing orchards provide the fruit for this robust, warming aperitif from County Cork.
The juice of the selected varieties is blended with fine apple brandy, then aged in Irish whiskey barrels for at least twelve months before bottling.
The rich, mellow flavours of this very special drink are well matched with mature cheeses and savoury canapés, and there's enough fruity acidity to suit fruit puddings and Christmas cake.
Careful selection from among the dozens of rare varieties of apple grown at Killahora means that this luxurious dessert wine has a unique character, enhanced by rigorous temperature control and slow fermentation for more than twelve months.
Buttery caramel and berry characters emerge from the citrus and apple aromas and expand silkily on the palate. This is a real treat, from a family business farming ancient orchards in County Cork.
Tasting is what it's all about, we think you'll agree. Join us in November and try some wines! These are sociable events, so bring your friends and catch up over a few glasses of something nice.
Thursday 10th November 6.30–8 pm, €25 A selection of wines, appetizers and chat with Ross from Bubble Brothers, in the upstairs bar at the Oyster Tavern—more or less our neighbours in the English Market. Places are limited and this is likely to be a popular event, so make sure of your seats today.
Thursday 17th November 7–9.30 pm, €35 A celebration of Nouveau and other wines from the Beaujolais, with a four-course menu of tasting plates and boards, at On the Pig's Back café in Douglas. Bubble Brothers' own Rémi will introduce his family's wines on the night, and there'll be case offers along with the usual Beaujolais Nouveau atmosphere.
Keep an eye out in a future newsletter for details of a festive wine tasting in Fermoy on Friday 18th November, with canapé suggestions and samples from the chefs at Hanna's café-deli-bistro in the town.
Bodegas Abadal back in stock
We know that some of you are partial to the wines we buy from Bodegas Abadal in the tiny Catalonian appellation of Pla de Bages. There's a racy, aromatic white blend and a ripe, elegant Cabernet Franc—and they are both back in stock.
We have added a couple more mixed cases to the list! Have a look at the Sauvignon Showcase if you fancy an all-white selection with a bit of a theme; or, if you weren't able to join us in Fermoy for the tasting earlier this month, you can get a flavour of that night with the Château de Manissy mixed case.
We hope you enjoy the long weekend and that the treats (see above) outnumber the tricks. Thanks for reading, as always!
