"Irish" wines
There are one or two courageous souls who are making wine in Ireland from Irish-grown grapes, but it's no secret that the weather and the geology of this island make commercial viticulture very challenging.
However, the Irish expatriates known as the Wine Geese are associated with some very good wines from places better suited to the growing of wine grapes, especially in Bordeaux. We offer a selection of these wines, from châteaux with more or less direct Irish connexions.
And, as proof of national adaptability and ingenuity, a new generation of Irish drinks is emerging that makes use of what is local. The fruit wines of Wicklow Way Wines' Móinéir range, and the reintroduction of mead to the market by the Kinsale Mead Company, represent welcome innovations. These products offer original, indigenous tastes that certainly have their place on Irish tables as well as further afield, and make an evocative gift or souvenir of a visit to Ireland and its lively food culture.
