The wines of Bordeaux are very well known, and include some of the most prestigious and expensive bottles in the world.

Reds, on the whole, are blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, often with other permitted varieties. Merlot predominates in the generally softer wines of the Right Bank north-east of the Dordogne river, while Cabernet varieties have the ascendant on the Left Bank—between the Dordogne and the Garonne, and between the Garonne and the sea.

White wines are usually blended from Sauvignon Blanc, often with Sémillon and Muscadelle and there is good value to be found in elegant, inexpensive dry wines. In Graves and Pessac-Léognan more serious bottles, sometimes aged in oak, command high prices.
