Avignonesi, based around Montepulciano, farms vineyards across the hills of south-eastern Tuscany. The modern winery was founded in 1974 by agronomist Ettore Falvo, who bought land belonging to the Avignonesi family (whose name goes back to local landowners recorded in the 16th century) and built a reputation for ambitious, modern wines from the area.

In 2009 the estate was bought by Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys, who radically reshaped it. She expanded the vineyards, moved production fully onto the estate and shifted the focus back to Montepulciano’s traditional grape, Sangiovese. At the same time she converted the property to organic and then biodynamic farming, with certification following in 2016 and 2019.

Today Avignonesi manages roughly 160–175 hectares of vines, and is one of the larger estates in the Montepulciano area, producing estate-grown wines that aim to reflect the character of the region.
