The Tezza taster case
A thoroughbred selection of six wines from the Tezza family, giving a taste of the main dry styles of the Valpolicella region: the fresh, rounded Valpolicella; rich, cherryish, spicy Ripasso; and full-bodied, dark and complex Amarone.

The rich, full-bodied Amarone is one of our most popular 'big reds', with depths suggesting dark chocolate and leather. There's generous alcohol and plenty of tannic structure from the concentrated juice of the dried grapes used, so these are wines that will keep for years but deliver a powerful experience even when relatively young.
When the grape skins from the Amarone are used to ferment fresh grape juice, the result is the cherryish, gently spicy Ripasso—another wine very much in demand, because there's some of that dried-grape concentration for much less expense.
The fresh, rounded character of the Valpolicella style comes from grapes that have not been dried, but are made into wine in the 'usual' way. There's great value in this lively, tasty light red. It suits all kinds of food and has just 12½ per cent alcohol.
Cousins Federico, Flavio and Vanio Tezza succeeded their fathers in 1998 to run the estate, which now, like the more recently released wines, is certified organic. All the work of the winery, from planting new vines to bottling, happens on the Tezza property, and the wines regularly receive high praise and high scores in international competitions.
