Alma Carraovejas sampler mix
€196.00
€166.60
An introduction to the quality and diversity of the wines in the Alma Carraovejas portfolio, with a balance of red and white wines in each box.
Viña Meín · Emilio Rojo, O Pequeno Meín, DO Ribeiro 2021
€23.00
€19.55
An aromatic white blend from the Ribeiro appellation in Galicia, north-western Spain. The region is well known for its Albariño wines, but O Pequeno combines the qualities of that grape with those of other traditional varieties to give a unique personality to 'the little one'.
Bodega Marañones, 30,000 Maravedíes, Vinos de Madrid 2019
€23.00
€19.55
This is a firm, but also rich and silky Garnacha from the sought-after granite and quartz soils of the Gredos mountains. A small percentage of local varieties is added to give it a distinct character before its eight months' ageing in French oak. Its red fruit intensity and gentle spice are paired with subtle tannins and a long finish.
Pure, mineral Verdejo, fermented in stainless steel to preserve as much of the aromatic and lively fruit character of the grape as possible. More than half of the grapes come from the same ancient pre-phylloxera vines as the winery's flagship Ossian Verdejo, with the balance made up of carefully selected young vine fruit (from the ancient vines of the future).
This is a superlative dry white, fermented in barrels and aged on its lees for nine months: aromatic, fresh and generous, with arresting purity and depth of flavour. Apple and apricot aromas and hints of vanilla are filled out on the palate with a buttery richness and a development towards more tropical suggestions, while a satisfying earthiness—the hint of bitterness typical of Verdejo—persists through the long finish.
This is top-flight Ribera del Duero, packed with ripe red fruit, spice and woodland character. It has a generous, creamy fullness in the mouth and its intense, juicy flavours are sustained by balanced acidity into a long, dry finish.
If you've tried this before you'll know it's a bargain even at the usual price. It's not on offer this time, but a welcome return to Cork nonetheless for the latest vintage of this Languedoc classic.
Cascastel, Fitou 'Prieur de Berre' AOP 2020
€16.00
GOLD MEDAL, MACON 2022
This smooth, rich red from the Fitou appellation brings together aromas of herbs, roads sizzling in the sun, and rich, spicy fruit. In the mouth it's supple and balanced, with more of those rich, satisfying fruits and underlying suggestions of vanilla, liquorice and black pepper.
Not quite a holiday in a bottle, but definitely a mini-break!
