Matetic Carménère offer September 2022
Save €4 on a smooth, rich red wine perfect for autumn—or perhaps you'd like to know that the chocolate-friendly wines of Mas Amiel are about to arrive in Cork? We also have two new mixed cases…
Lost in Bordeaux · Found in Chile ON OFFER
Meet Carmenere/Carmenère/Carménère Carménère (the accents vary in number once you're outside France) is a grape variety originally from Bordeaux but now very rare in the region. It's a sibling of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with characteristics of both.
Found in Chile? How's that? Before phylloxera devastated European vineyards, Chilean winemakers had brought cuttings home with them. The new Chilean vineyards—mostly thought until the 1990s to be made up of Merlot—provided a perfect home for a late-ripening grape that flourishes in the long, warm growing season there.
If you enjoy a soft and fruity dry red with a little spice, the blend of mocha-dusted cherry and plum fruit flavours in the Coralillo Carmenere should really hit the spot. Try it at this offer price and save €4 a bottle for a still smoother experience!
The sweet red Vintage Maury of Mas Amiel is famously a great match for chocolate or most things chocolate-y. It's both fresh and intense, and a customer favourite year on year.
The pallet you see below is on its way to us right now, with new stock of the Vintage and also two completely new wines: a no-added-sulphites/organic/biodynamic Grenache and Syrah. They're both soft and fruity with fresh, focused aromas and juicy, precise flavours. In the coming week, all these will be in Cork, on our shelves and also online!
Two new mixed cases
There are two new selections for you to try, or send to someone, in our Mixed Cases department. Tisn't quite the season to be jolly, but there's no harm in doing some early research!
The Matetic Masterclass is a thrilling introduction to the wines of the Matetic family who make the Carménère you read about at the top of this newsletter. The Sauvignon Blancs in the mix are super-fresh, both refined and expressive, and the reds, including a fine Pinot Noir and the hearty Winemaker's Blend, are smooth, deep and sunny—all seriously good wines, you'll find. We'd like to get people talking about these—we think they're terrific.
The Loire Valley mixed case also contains three bottles of Sauvignon Blanc, but you'll also find a very special, very elegant lees-aged Muscadet; one of our very few bottles of rosé Sancerre; and a juicy, mineral Pinot Noir from Reuilly at the eastern end of the Loire Valley wine region.
Thanks for reading! We're always happy to hear from you, and appreciate your custom.
Best wishes
Billy, Julian, Ross, Stephanie and Rémi
