Barbera

Barbera is a red wine grape variety originating from the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, particularly known for its deep colour, low tannins, and high acidity. It's one of Italy's most planted grapes, finding its stronghold in the regions of Asti and Alba.

Dating back to at least the 13th century, Barbera has a long history in Italian winemaking. Initially, it was considered a workhorse grape, producing high yields but often considered inferior to other varieties such as Nebbiolo. However, advances in winemaking techniques have elevated Barbera's status, and it is now appreciated for its versatility and vibrant flavours.

Barbera wines typically showcase bright cherry and raspberry flavours with hints of spice, making them suitable for both early consumption and for keeping. They range from light and easy-drinking to more complex, oak-aged styles.

The grape's high acidity makes it a great companion to rich, fatty foods, such as roasted meats and aged cheeses. Additionally, its affordability compared to some other Italian varietals has contributed to its popularity both domestically and internationally.
