Feudo Montoni, Perricone ‘Core’Regular price €36.00
A polished, full-bodied Sicilian red made from the native Perricone grape.
Perricone is the principal grape in the ruby style of Marsala, where its typical body, colour and alcohol are all welcome.
It's a late-ripening variety that was severely affected by phylloxera at the end of the nineteenth century, and in many vineyards was subsequently replaced by the more highly valued Nero d'Avola.
In practice, the two varieties are often reunited in blended wines, where the generosity of the Nero d'Avola fruit mellows the bold tannins of the Perricone—but in the right hands, and with care and skill, Perricone makes an interesting, aromatic and robust red.
Dark and dried fruit aromas, with hints of spice and cocoa, introduce a soft, rounded red with good, food-friendly acidity and assertive tannins that give a stylish polish to a modern expression of a traditional, and now relatively uncommon, grape.
This is a wine to decant, if possible an hour before serving.
