Decanter World Wine Awards 2018
Now here's one you don't see very often. Cococciola (say cocco-chee-ola) is a very rare grape found in Abruzzo and also in Puglia.
It yields firmly grassy, citrussy white wines that suit light meals and fish dishes perfectly. The grape used to be used almost exclusively for blending and was very rarely vinified on its own. Thanks, though, to the shrinking of the European wine lake, and an increasing interest in unfairly overlooked local varieties, Cococciola is enjoying its day in the sun.
The Decanter summary gives a good idea of what to expect: fresh, juicy acidity and some nutty, herbal character too in a dry, mineral white that makes a welcome change from the usual suspects. Variety is the spice of life—get a taste with this regional speciality from the breezy Adriatic coast of Abruzzo.
