Quick Overview

Delicious, reliable and satisfying easy drinking from the Loire Valley. This is a smooth, medium-bodied Malbec with bramble aromas, gentle tannins, plummy fruit and just a little spice. A crowd-pleaser if ever there was one: tasty, good-looking and affordable.

Further Details

A strikingly light and fresh rendition of this often-burly grape, more familiar from Argentina or Cahors in the south west of France. Cédric Allion's Le Poira is a mid-weight Malbec at most, plummy and soft, with gentle tannins, a palate-cleansing wash, and delicate notes of raspberry, clove and dark flowers. There's only twelve per cent alcohol too, which seems surprising given its supple, generous texture and dark flavours.

This would make a lovely choice with roast belly of pork, duck, burgers, or on its own, possibly slightly chilled.

Touraine is the Loire's most important wine region. The local tuffeau stone has been quarried extensively over the years to build chateaux, leaving caves ideal for the making and maturation of wine.

In order to meet the demands of a relatively cool climate and owing to the variety of soils, red Touraine wines may be made from any of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, Malbec (called 'Côt' here), Pinots Noir, Gris and Meunier, Gamay, Pineau d'Aunis and Grolleau.
