Further Details

Generously full-bodied, lush, super-ripe Zinfandel with aromas of ripe juicy black cherries, chocolate, and vanilla in a hedonistic, unctuous style that finishes with caramel and fruit cake flavours. A great barbeque wine, its fruity power is well balanced enough to make it very enjoyable on its own too.

Featured by Martin Moran MW in Newstalk's 'Movies & Booze' slot (July 2012), and in his Sunday Times column (August 2012)

"The wonderfully-named Cycles Gladiator Zinfandel 2010 shows the kind of rich, lush blackberry fruit that has made this variety so popular."

The Lodi AVA (American Viticultural Area), part of the larger Central Valley wine region of California, is east of San Francisco, between state capital Sacramento and Stockton.

Although 115km from the Pacific, Lodi enjoys a more moderate, Mediterranean -style climate than the rest of the baking Central Valley, thanks to the many rivers that bisect the AVA. Topography plays a role too; while most areas of inland California are separated from the cooling sea by the Coastal Ranges, Lodi is not. The Bay Area forms a significant gap that allows on-shore breezes to penetrate many miles inland.

That said, Lodi is still fairly warm, and so is well suited to the production of full-bodied red wines. Zinfandel accounts for about half of Lodi’s output.
