Further Details

This is a tiny vineyard, the oldest in Bordeaux, producing a tiny quantity of amazing wine from exclusively pre-phylloxera grapes just a hundred yards or so from St-Emilion, with vines over 100 years old on average.

Clos Louie Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2009
A fresh, masculine wine, with elegant power and an excellent balance between fruit and tannin.
Serve it between 17 and 19°  with grilled meat, mushrooms, spicy dishes and cheeses.

The 0.9 hectare estate has a pre-phylloxera parcel of vines more than a hundred years old , and is co-planted with Merlot, Malbec à queue rouge, Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard, which is in conversion to fully biodynamic status, has always been managed in the most traditional way possible, with only mattocks used to cultivate the land in order to preserve the roots of the old vines which would otherwise be damaged by the weight of a tractor.
The grapes are picked by hand and sorted twice before vinification and treading by foot in thirty hectolitre stainless steel vats.

VINTAGE 2004 : 88 pts Only the second offering from this microscopic estate, Clos Louie’s vineyard includes some of the oldest vines in Bordeaux, a 150-year-old block of Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The powerful 2004, which possesses 14.3% natural alcohol, possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as aromas and flavors of blackberries, raspberries, incense, and spring flowers. Spicy and medium-bodied with a tannic finish, it will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age, and should keep for 10-12 years
VINTAGE 2003 : 90 pts in april 2006 This microscopic estate (4,000 bottles produced) consists of slightly more than 2 acres of a pre-phylloxera, 150-year-old vineyard planted with Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Clos Louis’s debut vintage is 2003, and their consulting oenologist is the brilliant Claude Gros (the maitre behind the Negly wines from the Languedoc). Soft, exotic, opulent, and round, the 2003 possesses terrific purity, admirable density, silky tannin, and a gorgeous dark ruby/purple color. This fragrant, full-bodied offering is best consumed during its first 7-8 years of life.
