Here is our latest competition, warmish on the heels of the Café Mao/iKi beer one of a while back. By the way, in short order you'll be able to add a case of iKi to any of the ready-to-go mixed cases on the website for just fifty euro instead of the usual sixty. A party pack to reckon with. This is not live yet, but later today I hope.
But to the competition. As per yesterday's post, we are looking forward to the latest visit of Jean-Raymond Clarenc from Clos Triguedina in Cahors, south-west France. He'll be introducing a selection of the deep, dark Malbecs from the estate at a tasting dinner in Cork on Wednesday 19th November, thanks to the participation of Kevin Crowley, restaurateur at Fenn's Quay.
Two prizes of €50 worth of delicious dinner with wine are up for grabs. What you must do to have a chance of winning is have a look at the bottle pictured below, and estimate its value. The two estimates closest to Bubble Brothers' own independent valuation posted as comments here will be able to enjoy Wednesday's gala event free of charge.
There are a few terms and conditions, mostly calling on participants to enter into the spirit of the thing:
- You can enter as often as you like, but we'd prefer, will strive, not to give both prizes to the same person. That seems only fair.
- The valuation you're trying to guess is based on a strawpoll in the Bubble Brothers office. This is meant to be fun.
- Only the prize offered is available as a prize - no substitutes!
I thank all entrants in advance, to avoid clogging up the comments with thank-yous in the event that a few people have a go.
Well the current release of the wine can be had for about ~€10 or so, but this looks like it's at least 7-10 years old. I'm not sure whether age would help with a wine like this, which I imagine is meant to be drunk quite young. A demi sec from a good producer in the Loire can age (and improve) for a good 40 years though (not sure about cremant though) so I don't imagine the age
would have harmed this wine at all.
I'll put my guess in at €15.
Purely based on the condition of the bottle (and it is sealed) I'm thinking this is something worth keeping €110
Okay boys.....I am a bit torn here. It is quite cheap to buy if you take new releases. Also, all wines I have seen from Veuve de Vernay were sparkling wines and not Champagne. The dearest I have seen was around the €15 mark. I can't see a vintage year on the bottle (am I right that they normally don't do vintages???). But considering that a lot of people think that it is of high value when the bottle looks just old enough..I would go down the middle route and guess €40-50....and please please please....let me win ;-)
Elke
Random guess - €240.99
It looks as though Julian's had a couple of goes at opening this bottle! Perhaps if I offered €17.95 he might open it?
Hi all,
Just writing to thank you you for a wonderful dining experience that was had by myself, Mam and Dad on Monday in Mao's establishment in Dundrum shopping centre.
Food was absolutely first class, fresh, organic and ever so tasty. The IKI beer accompaniment was delicious and very refreshing. It complimented the food so very well.
The staff in Mao's could not do enough for us. I have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful restaurant and will most certainly be visiting it any time I am in Dundrum.
Thank you so much Bubble Brothers for this wonderful prize which was very much appreciated.
Ok, I;m going to go with a price at the lower end of the spectrum of just EUR 4.78.
Slainte !

Thank you, everybody, for joining in - the competition is now closed. I'm writing a quick post to announce the results and winners.
Value is precisely nothing!
We are the producer and this is very very old stock!
See our site for new labels/packs/blends! Would you like some, as we are looking for distribution in Ireland!?
Dear Mr Isaac,
Thank you very much for commenting. It's nice to get an authoritative estimate. I hope all the commenters have already had a look at [the website - malicious link removed]. Certainly the new livery and press reviews together make an attractive package. I think it might be an idea to send a bottle to all the commenters above in exchange for an online review - I don't mind hosting that, if you're interested. In respect of the bigger picture - well, we are Bubble Brothers, so I would not turn down the opportunity to discuss possibilities in the Irish market.
What a very nice idea, Julien!
